Keys that unlock the Valuables

I was just looking at a keychain last night while in a pensive mood and discover that keys that open cars have two sides while keys that open other things, i.e. doors, only have one. This is to make it harder to pick the lock on a car door, I assume in my limited knowledge of such matters. But why is it deemed more of a crisis, and therefore worth more effort to prevent, that a car which is only a mode on transportation and which is something which a replacement can be found for, protected more than a lock which could potentially lead into a house full of irreplaceable and priceless human lives?
