Gregory the Great

Today, September 3, is my feast day, the feast day of Pope Saint Gregory the Great. My middle name, as I think I've noted here before, is "Magnus" which is Latin for "Great". Who was he though? Read Catholic Encyclopedia's page dedicated to him.

Thanks to Fr. Jim, by the way, for the reminder. And check out Father's photo project of different illustrations of what is called the Miraculous Mass of St. Gregory the Great.

I believe, of course, that canonization should not be done frivilously and that plenty of time should be given to the study of the candidate's life. However, for those of you who risk becoming too knee-jerk on the question, keep in mind that Gregory was declared a saint the same year he died, 604 AD.
